Eskişehir, located in northwestern Turkey, is a city where old meets new in unexpected ways. Known for its youthful vibe due to its two major universities, the city is also deeply rooted in history. It sits along the Porsuk River, which winds through lively neighborhoods and parks. The riverfront, once mostly industrial, has been transformed into a place where gondolas pass under bridges and locals gather at riverside cafes.

Meknes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities, is a historic jewel known for its blend of grandeur and tradition. Once the capital under Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, the city was envisioned as the “Versailles of Morocco,” filled with monumental gates, sprawling walls, and lavish palaces.

Set along a gentle curve of the Main River in Bavaria, the town of Miltenberg presents a streetscape that feels carefully preserved rather than rebuilt. Rows of half-timbered houses line a single main street, their wooden beams and painted facades forming one of the most photographed scenes in Germany. The old market square, known as the Schnatterloch, draws attention with its sandstone fountain and tightly packed historic buildings, creating a setting that has remained largely unchanged.

Lead’s Main Street reflects its long history with places that invite people to explore local life beyond mining. The Black Hills Mining Museum offers displays of mining tools, machinery and a simulated underground mine experience that brings to life how miners worked the Black Hills over generations. Along the same street, galleries, cafés and historic buildings make for pleasant stops between deeper dives into the past.

Karpathos is marked by the peculiar Karpathian houses, built of carved stone, full of embroidery and characteristic interior decorations. From Pigadia you may visit Kyra Panagia, a picturesque bay with a marvelous beach and a monastery of the same name. A little further, on the northern promontory of Karpathos, lies the Diafani village; on the nearby little island of Saria we see Palatia, with ruins of the ancient city of Nisyros.
